What began as a hopeful debut for Oyster Lane quickly turned into a statement run at Caulfield on Saturday, with the colt finishing a close second and just 0.25 lengths off the winner in a performance that exceeded pre-race expectations.
Connections had quietly fancied a top-four finish, but the way Oyster Lane put himself into the race and surged to the front at the top of the straight was impressive. It was only inexperience, not ability, that cost him a dream debut win.
“He got to the front and just didn’t know what to do,” jockey John Allen said post-race. “He had a good look around, even had a bit of a look at the big screen. He just got a bit lost out there on his own.”
That brief lapse proved crucial, as the eventual winner came on the outside of him, reeling Oyster Lane in during the final strides.
Still, there was plenty of upside in the performance and we were quick to acknowledge it.
“You don’t love to get beaten and especially by such a close margin but for a debut, that was a fantastic run,” Adrien said. “He’s still learning. Once he puts it all together, he’ll be very hard to beat.”
The occasion was made even more special by the presence of Oyster Lane’s owners, who were on course to enjoy the experience.
“We had a great day with the owners, it was fantastic to share a moment like that with them on debut,” Adrien said. “We really appreciate their support and are thrilled they could be there to enjoy it with us.”
With natural improvement expected from the run, Oyster Lane may have already positioned himself as a legitimate spring contender. Oyster Lane may have just stamped himself as one to watch when the bigger races roll around. One to watch.
