Brian Hibberd’s career in racing spans over four decades, during which he became one of the most respected jockeys in both New Zealand and Australia. With over 1,000 career wins, Brian's legacy is defined by his ability to succeed at the highest levels of the sport. His notable victories include 16 Group One wins and more than 120 wins in Group 2, 3, and Listed races. Some of the highlights of his illustrious career include the VRC Derby, AJC Oaks, BRC Brisbane Cup, Phar Lap Stakes, J J Liston Stakes, Rupert Steele (Gilgai) Stakes, Dalgety Handicap, Railway and Telegraph Handicaps, and multiple editions of the prestigious New Zealand Cup.
A jockey with a rare combination of skill and resilience, Brian’s career spanned many of the great racecourses in Australia and New Zealand. He was renowned for his tactical riding and his ability to form strong partnerships with horses, which led him to consistent success on the track. His standout rides in iconic races are still talked about among racing enthusiasts, and he has earned a reputation as one of the most capable jockeys of his generation.
After retiring from competitive race riding in 2005, Brian shifted his focus to the behind-the-scenes aspects of the racing industry. He began his post-riding career as an Assistant Starter in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he oversaw the safe and efficient start of races, an essential role in ensuring smooth racing operations.
In 2011, Brian moved to Melbourne, where he joined the stables of Champion Trainer Peter Moody, renowned for training top-level thoroughbreds such as Black Caviar. As a trackwork rider, Brian was instrumental in the preparation of horses targeted for major races in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. His intimate knowledge of horse racing, both from the saddle and from the ground, made him a key part of Peter Moody’s operation, and his meticulous approach to racehorse preparation was invaluable in ensuring top performances.
Following Peter Moody's retirement from training, Brian continued his work in Melbourne racing as the Training Track Supervisor at Caulfield Racecourse. His extensive experience, combined with his deep understanding of the horse racing ecosystem, makes him a vital asset to any racing team.
