VIC - Flavien Diard

Flavien Diard’s passion for racing began at just 15 years old, when he entered the world of racehorses under the mentorship of his father, Cyriaque Diard, a respected French trainer. Growing up surrounded by the industry, Flavien developed a deep understanding of horses and racing from an early age. His formal training began at the CFA Laval racing academy, where he graduated twice, earning recognition for his skill and dedication.

Early Years in France: Learning from the Best

After completing his education at CFA Laval, Flavien sought to expand his experience and moved to Chantilly, the heart of French racing, to ride for renowned trainer Rodolphe Collet. This move was instrumental in furthering his career as he gained valuable race-riding experience at some of France's most iconic tracks.

International Experience: The United States and Christophe Clement

Flavien's ambition led him across the Atlantic to the United States, where he joined the stable of multiple Group 1 winning trainer Christophe Clement. Flavien embraced the challenges and opportunities of American racing, riding top horses in prestigious races across major American tracks. His time in the U.S. not only helped refine his technique but also gave him a broader understanding of international racing practices and the highest standards of competition.

Back to France: Joining Francis-Henri Graffard’s Team

After his successful stint in the U.S., Flavien returned to France, eager to apply the riding techniques he had learned in America. He joined Francis-Henri Graffard, the trainer behind the 2019 Group 1 Prix de Diane winner. At Graffard’s stable, Flavien quickly became a key asset, riding for one of the most successful trainers in France. His time there solidified his reputation as a talented, versatile jockey capable of competing at the highest level in Europe.

A Move to Australia: Flourishing Under Danny O'Brien

In 2017, Flavien decided to take on a new challenge and moved to Melbourne, Australia, to join Danny O'Brien, the Group 1 Melbourne Cup-winning trainer. Sponsored by O'Brien, Flavien quickly established himself as one of the stable’s best assets, riding some of its most successful champions. His ability to adapt to the fast-paced and competitive nature of Australian racing earned him recognition in the industry.

Flavien is particularly drawn to the growth of Australian racing, where prize money has been increasing significantly in recent years. He appreciates the opportunities presented by the expanding market and views it as a place of immense potential for his career.

Long-Term Goals: Becoming a Trainer

Flavien’s ultimate goal is to one day become a horse trainer. His international experience, coupled with his strong foundation in both French and American racing techniques, positions him well to take the next step in his career. Flavien is passionate about blending the best practices from around the world to enhance training methods and race strategies. His experience in both Europe and Australia makes him well-equipped to take on this challenge and ultimately contribute to the evolution of horse racing in Australia.
